 NEIMAn night shines bright
A Review of the CJF Fundraiser

Nestled amid a rustic backdrop, The Skirball Cultural Center offered a pristine setting where luminaries from the worlds of sports and entertainment, recently joined the art community in honoring celebrated painter, LeRoy Neiman.

Presented by The California Jazz Foundation and graciously hosted by KKJZ's Tommy Hawkins, Leroy Neiman & All That Jazz was an extraordinary gala. Edythe Bronston, CJF President & Founder, eloquently spoke of the foundation's mission to assist musicians and others in need who have banged the drum for jazz, dedicating their lives to this genre.

James Moody, Peter O'Malley, Bill Withers, Jack Sheldon, Rafer Johnson, Charlie Haden, Barbara Morrison, Saul Levine, Catalina Popescu, Amy Alcott, Bill Henderson, Terry Gibbs, Howard Rumsey, John Altman, Tim Yarger and Howard Bingham, were among the distinguished guests who enjoyed the sumptuous cuisine. They were also treated to a rousing set by Kenny Burrell, Hubert Laws, Mike Melvoin, Roberto Miranda and Clayton Cameron.

Later, a charismatic Neiman posed for pictures with invited guests. With style, grace and humility, Mr. Neiman engaged each one, ensuring that the moment would be memorable. The twinkle in his eyes appeared to eclipse Neiman's signature moustache. Award-winning filmmaker, Eric Marciano, screened an insightful documentary, LeRoy Neiman's Big Band. The poignant images provide an intimate portrait of Mr. Neiman as he reveals not only his unique approach, but the inspiration he garners from the musicians themselves.

The evening culminated when the artist unveiled his stunning masterpiece. Proving again that jazz is also visual, Neiman's bold brushstrokes and vivid hues, brilliantly depict his nostalgic dream band. Bird, Dizzy, Miles, Benny Goodman, Ella and Duke were just a few of his timeless subjects. When it came to selecting them, the project was somewhat daunting. But when Tommy Hawkins carefully considered an honoree for this classy affair--- the obvious choice was LeRoy Neiman. The man, his provocative art and the charitable cause that CJF champions, are fused together inherently --- just like the compelling colors on LeRoy's palette.
